BIRD BRAIN by Vern Thiessen
On Tour: Oct. 14th – Dec. 7th, 2008
Appropriate for grades K – 6

A weather-beaten woodsman travels through the forest every day to cut the wood that he sells on Hat Street. The money he makes feeds his family. It is the only way of life he has ever known.  On Hat Street the strict protocol is that you must raise your hat to everyone you meet. It is tradition. It is expected. If you want to make money on Hat Street you tip your hat!

Then, one cold winter day, while chopping wood in the forest he stumbles upon a nest of orphaned young birds desperate to survive.

In an instant his life is transformed. He chooses to flout tradition and risks his life in order to protect the family of birds. As a result of his actions he is labeled “Bird Brain” by the town. He must use his wits to save his life and his beloved birds!

This folk tale is complete with colourful characters, music, a Festival of Fools and a few surprises.

BIRD BRAIN is a story about love, trust, leadership and perseverance. It is also about having the courage to be different even if it means not fitting in.
