OFFENSIVE FOULS by Jason Long On Tour: Feb. 3rd – Mar. 15th, 2009
Appropriate for grades 7 - 12
“I don’t care that we were born in the same country, look in a mirror! You don’t know a thing about bearing the brunt of racist comments. About what it feels like to have hatred shooting out of people’s eyes at you.”
OFFENSIVE FOULS is a play for teens that tells the story of Christine (a young Chinese girl) and Joey (her Caucasian boyfriend) as they struggle to understand their own identities.
An altercation with a group of teens at Chan’s Grocery forces the young couple to confront their own fears, acceptance and trust. The show focuses on identity, young love and the powerful and dangerous undercurrent of racism.
As Christine and Joey work their way towards the truth about the conflict the audience witnesses the dangers of stereotyping, lying and miscommunication. The characters remind us that each one of us is important, deserves respect and dignity, and that ancestral heritage deserves to be celebrated.
